54 Street Sanitary Sewer Extension

The City of Cold Lake will install a new sanitary sewer line on 54th Street, connecting it to the existing 375mm sanitary trunk main located east of the industrial subdivision. This project aims to address current sanitary service connection issues for several commercial properties and support future upgrades to a gravity-based sewer system.

Location: 54 Street, between 56 Avenue and 57 Avenue

Schedule

Nov. 2024: Underground construction to start

Spring 2025: Surface works construction to start

Summer 2025: Project completion

Updates

June 11, 2024: Engineering work awarded to SE Design and Consulting

October 15, 2024: Construction work awarded to Urlacher Construction

Background

Several businesses along 54th Street, between 57th Avenue and 56th Avenue, are experiencing sewer issues primarily due to grinder pump malfunctions or failures in the sanitary service connections to the main sewer. This area is served by a low-pressure force main sanitary system, similar to the system in the Horseshoe Bay Estate subdivision. Although the infrastructure is aging, it still operates as designed.

Upgrading to a new gravity-based sanitary main system would allow these businesses to switch from pump-based service to a gravity-fed service, improving reliability and potentially reducing maintenance needs.

Budget

Approved Budget: $400,000.00

Funding Source:

  • 2024 Cold Lake Air Weapons Range (CLAWR): $400,000

How will this benefit the Community?

The Project will improve the level of service to the area, while also reducing the operational and maintenance costs associated to the existing force main within the industrial subdivision.

Strategic Alignment

The replacement of the road surfaces and underground infrastructure in this area aligns with the City’s Asset Management Policy. This policy is supported by a comprehensive monitoring system that evaluates asset condition, risks, service levels, and inventory. This information is used to help Council make well-informed decisions about design, programming, and funding, ensuring projects are prioritized and funded based on data-driven assessments by City Administration
