This page is to provide updates to the community in the event of a city-wide emergency. 

Update 6: January 23, 2026 - 1507

The City of Cold Lake has confirmed with Atco Electric that they are anticipating all power to be restored in Cold Lake by around 1530 (3:30 pm).

Update 5: January 23, 2026 - 1400

At this time we have no new information to share beyond the previous post. We are working to gain knowledge on anticipated timeframes and status updates, and as soon as we verify any new information, we will post it. Our apologies for the lack of information anticipated for our 2:00 pm update.

Update 4: January 23, 2026 - 1200

More homes and businesses have had electrical services restored. ATCO Electric crews are continuing to work on power restoration as quickly as possible. We thank those who have opened their homes or businesses to share their warmth during these cold temperatures. Unfortunately, we do not have any additional information on original cause of the outage however we understand that ATCO Electric has isolated the area that requires repair work. ATCO Electric is anticipating electrical services for areas that are still affected should be restored early this afternoon.
City facilities that have power now have phone access as well. The Energy Centre has regained power.

Update 3: January 23, 2026 - 1020

The substation is back online, and ATCO is working to resolve areas that are still without power.
The City of Cold Lake understands this can be a difficult situation for homes without power in these temperatures. For anyone in need of a place to warm up, Cold Lake and District FCSS is open.
Status of City facilities:
Note: No phone lines are working.
City Hall: power (no internet/phone lines)
FCSS: no power (no internet/phone lines but open to the public)
Energy Centre: no power
Public Works: no power
Fire stations: no power (but ready to respond)
Transfer Station/Landfill: power / open
Cold Lake Transit: running and operational

Update 2: January 23, 2026 - 0920

The City of Cold Lake has confirmed with ATCO the substation has been repaired, and that power is slowly being restored in certain areas.
Should anyone still be without power and need a place to warm up, Cold Lake and District FCSS is open.
We understand that some areas are still without power, including several street lights along highway 28. Crews continue to work to resolve these issues. These intersections are to be treated at four-way stops unless working or blinking.

Update: January 23, 2026 - 0900

As of Friday, January 23, at 8:45 am, the City has confirmed with ATCO that the issue originated at a substation. ATCO is actively working on a solution and anticipates that power should be restored in about one hour.
The City of Cold Lake continues to monitor the situation and make plans in the event that the outage persists.
The City will provide another update by 1000

January 23, 2026 - 0755

As of Friday, January 23, at 7:55 am, ATCO is reporting power outages in northeast Alberta. Various areas are affected, including parts of Cold Lake.
The City is actively seeking information to access the scope and scale of the outage.
Given the cold temperatures, the City is also standing up its Emergency Operations Centre, and making plans in the event that the outage is persistent.
