Council gives go-ahead for curling rink upgrades

Cold Lake, AB – Cold Lake Council voted to proceed with upgrades that will improve the Cold Lake Golf & Winter Club’s curling facility video systems in time for the Alberta Games and position the facility to host higher profile events and tournaments.

The curling rink’s overhead video feeds have proven to have hit their useful life span, with the system often becoming unusable or introducing static into the feed, limiting its usefulness to use for scoring games and improving user experience at the facility. The upgrade will also be crucial for the curling rink’s ability to successfully host the 2026 Alberta Winter Games.

“We are running old technology in the facility that has served its purpose but is too out of date to warrant reasonable repairs,” Mayor Craig Copeland said. “An update to this system will serve the facility for a long time to come and will open up future options to host tournaments and other high-profile events.”

The overhead video cameras and wiring will be replaced along with the system’s video switcher and televisions at a cost of just over $90,000 and are scheduled for completion by the end of 2025.
