Council to debate rules for personal tents at Kinosoo Beach
Cold Lake, AB – Council signaled to administration that it was open to having a look at draft regulations for tents and other temporary structures that are increasingly being used by the public at Kinosoo Beach.
Administration noted that, although complaints about tents and other temporary shade structures are not common, it has been noted that users of the beach are bringing larger tents and other items for use as shade structures. Similar trends in other communities have prompted the introduction of regulations as large structures placed on the beach by individuals can impact the enjoyment of the space by other users.
Large tents, awnings and other shade structures can also pose safety risks in high wind. The use of tents for outdoor commercial use is generally regulated by bylaw for similar reasons.
“Council raised the inquiry to administration after a resident brought up their concerns on the increasing size, quantity and types of structures being used at Kinosoo Beach,” Chief Administrative Officer, Kevin Nagoya, said. “We do not believe that this is about regulating personal tents and shade structures in the same way that tents for commercial uses are regulated. But perhaps there could be some reasonable limits considered regarding the size or location of such structures. The primary focus here is to ensure the space remains open for all to enjoy.”
Council voted to have administration draft potential regulations for discussion at a future meeting. Administration will research and consider options for such regulations as it develops its report for Council’s consideration.
“Our intention here is not to come in with a heavy hand, but to make sure that Kinosoo Beach is equally enjoyed by all who attend the space,” Mayor Bob Mattice said. “The beach is becoming incredibly popular, it’s recognized as being amongst the top beaches in Canada, and space along the beach is at a premium. It is important that we at least have this discussion to see if it is an area of concern worth regulating, or if we can simply monitor the situation and carry on with the status quo.”
