Design unveiled for CL Medical Clinic expansion

Cold Lake, AB – Designs have been completed for the expansion of CL Medical Clinic, which will increase the floor space by more than 15,000 square feet. 

“The doctors and staff have very limited space in the clinic as it is right now,” said Chris Vining, board chair and council appointment of the Municipally Controlled Corporation (MCC). “This expansion will give everyone a bit more room to breathe, as well as space to grow.”

The expansion includes a second floor, giving space for future space considerations, and room for additional doctors to be recruited.

“When we first started the MCC, there were only two doctors working out of the clinic,” said Vining. “Now we are up to six, with one more on the way in the next few months, bring us to a total of seven.”

Included in the expansion are more examination rooms, doctor offices, and a larger waiting room, all of which will provide a better flow for patients waiting to be seen.

CL Medical Clinic is operated by the City of Cold Lake’s MCC, which unveiled the new designs at its Annual General Meeting in the beginning of September.

“We wanted to thank everyone for coming out to the AGM,” said Vining. “This is an important milestone for the building, and we’re looking forward to the future.”

Municipalities typically do not run businesses or organizations, so an MCC can instead be established to provide services, manage assets, or undertake specific functions. The MCC is led by a board of directors, which consists of two members of council and three members of the public. Although the MCC was not formed until 2023, negotiations for the clinic began in 2022.

“We knew our community was in dire need of more family physicians,” said Vining. “By taking this route, we were able to better advocate for driving more doctors to the community.”
