Letters of support approved for two grant applications

Cold Lake, AB – Two letters of support were approved by council at the Sept. 16 Special Council Meeting.

The first letter request came from the University of Saskatchewan, from Jacob A. K. Alhassan, Assistant Professor for the Department of Community Health & Epidemiology, College of Medicine, for his Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Insight grant application. The reason behind reaching out to the City of Cold Lake was for Cold Lake Transit, which has generated a lot of interest in western Canada as a free transit system.

“We get a lot of calls about the City’s transit system and how it works,” said Mayor Craig Copeland. “It’s become a cornerstone in our efforts to reduce barriers, particularly for youth, seniors, low-income families, and supporting local businesses.”

The second request for a letter of support came from the Cold Lake John Howard Society, to accompany their application for Temporary Emergency Response Measures (TEAM) winter program funding.

“The Cold Lake John Howard Society receives their operational funding from the Government of Alberta,” said Copeland. “We receive monthly updates from the Society about the programs and services being offered, as well as statistics on the people using their services. We’ve been advised that over 70 per cent of their clients are from within the region, and their support and services are regularly used with growing numbers.”

Both letters of support were approved by council and will be drafted, signed, and sent out in the next few days.
