Operations Centre hits construction milestone

Cold Lake, AB – The City of Cold Lake’s Public Works Operations Centre has hit a crucial milestone with foundations being poured this week. 

“This project has been a long time coming with the earth works being started in 2022,” Mayor Craig Copeland said. “Our Public Works staff have been very patient waiting for their new operations centre, so it’s exciting to see it coming together.”

Public Works has long struggled with space constraints at its current location on 16 Street. Over the years, various departments within Public Works have expanded to meet the growing demand of infrastructure repairs, utility maintenance, waste removal, capital project management, and the addition of Cold Lake Transit. 

With a significant amount of site preparation and peripheral infrastructure work needed to support the building in its location, the foundations represent a large step forward from which the community will be able to see the new operations centre take shape. 

The Public Works Operation Centre project comes in at just over $48 million. It will include an administration building, fleet maintenance and storage bays, as well as working bays for various departments, including Roads, Utilities, Parks and Building Maintenance.

The building was designed to accommodate all current needs and to provide for growth, with future equipment and staffing needs in mind.

“This is an exciting opportunity to see a facility that will benefit the services that our residents depend on, but also to benefit the dedicated staff who provide those services,” Copeland said. “They’ve been patient, and they deserve a modernized workspace, and that’s exactly what we are delivering.”
