Fire Prevention Week

Cold Lake Fire Rescue is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®)—the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week (FPW) for more than 100 years—to promote this year’s FPW campaign, “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!” The campaign works to educate everyone about the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home.
According to NFPA, smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half (54 percent). Meanwhile, roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.

Here are some key smoke alarm safety tips and guidelines:
- Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home.
- Make sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities.
- Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.
- Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.
The extra step:
One thing that should always be checked is the expiration date on both smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. While most detectors are certified for 10 years, the lifespan and efficiency can be reduced if occupants smoke or vape within the home, as oils from both will coat the devices' detecting surfaces. It's a good thing to keep your detectors clean.
Cold Lake Fire Rescue Open House
On October 8 from 6 pm - 8 pm, visit either the North Fire Hall (718-10 St.) or the South Fire Hall (5201-55 St.) to celebrate Fire Prevention Week with a BBQ and tour of the fire halls. There will be firefighters on hand to answer any questions you may have to get a hands on look at all the different equipment CLFR uses to keep our community safe.
Deputy Fire Chief Norm Hollis wants to remind everyone that they are welcome anytime to either of the firehalls, especially if they want to learn more about fire prevention in their homes. The Cold Lake Fire-Rescue will also come to your home (or business) to do a fire inspection and provide some suggestions to help be better prepared for the unexpected. This service is free of charge and members can also help with suggestions for safe exits for anyone with mobility issues.
